High Peaks Tele Clinic, March 16-18 at Round Lake Campus, Lake Placid, New York.

Beginner to intermediate telemark skiers, (ages 21 and up) team up with some of the best tele instructors in the Northeast.

Explore the world of Telemark skiing by staying and dining with us at the Eileen Rockefeller House on Round Lake in the Adirondack Park. Whether you are a first time telemark skier or an experienced free heeler, we can expand your skills through multiple terrain options on and off campus in the heart of the High Peaks Wilderness Area.

Hosted by PSIA Telemark education staff members and North Country School faculty John and Libby Doan, we will have access to Whiteface and Mt. Pisgah resorts, as well as a private 25 trail system and rope tow in the shadow of Pitchoff Mountain. Equipment rentals are available through NCS and local ski shops. Depending on the skill levels in the group and conditions, a short backcountry ski trip may be available.

At 2,200 feet in elevation, the Eileen Rockefeller House, or “RockE”, is located in the heart of the High Peaks Wilderness Area of the Adirondack Park. Enjoy a commanding view of Cascade Pass over Round Lake, and ski out access to private nordic and tele trails on partner campus shared with North Country School.

Please note that no room has a private bath. Four full baths are shared between the nine rooms.

This is an event for adults age 21 or older.

What to expect:

We will get you geared up on Friday morning and head to Whiteface. Depending on your ability, we will divide into separate groups and find suitable terrain. Beginners will explore the the basics of the telemark turn. Beginning with balance and stance then moving to learning the telemark turn we will explore the easier terrain on the mountain to develop these skills. For more advanced skiers we will determine your goals and explore different terrain, moguls, steeps and glades. The focus for upper level skiers is learning to adjust your movements to excel in changing conditions and have a ripping good time. On Saturday and Sunday we can return to Whiteface or head to a different hill, or explore some backcountry skills on Cobble Hill.

Evening fare will include stories such as nordic/tele history, the story of the Berkebeiner, origins of skiing in Mongolia, as well as traditional Nordic celebratory fare of Aquavit, smoked salmon, chocolate and a cheese that I cannot remember the name of right now.

RockE is a classic Adirondack Lake House. There have been many upgrades, including wi-fi throughout the house. There will not be daily housekeeping, bathrooms are shared with other guests, and it is our hope that everyone chips in to clean up after meals and after themselves. While these may be drawbacks to some, they continue the School ethos of “rugged, resourceful, and resilient” along with the Camp constant, “Many hands make light work.” This phrase is Camp + School, not Camp alone.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations before February 16, 2018 will receive a full refund.

Cancellations after February 16, 2018 will receive a refund, minus 20% processing fee.

Cancellations after March 1, 2018 will receive NO lodging refund. A refund on the tuition and meals portion of the event will be made, minus a 20% processing fee.

No-Shows (i.e., cancellations after March 13, 2018) are subject to full forfeiture of the registration price.

Medical or family emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Instructors:

John Doan: With a PISA Level III instructor certification in alpine and telemark skiing, John Doan directs the ski program at North Country School. In addition John is a Telemark Education staff examiner, and holds Level I certification in nordic skiing. With a BA in music from Haverford College, John has also taught music to all grades at NCS since 2004, and is an accomplished musician in his spare time. He lives at nearby Sheepback Farm with his wife Libby. Their two children, Hannah (NCS 05) and Jacob (NCS 07), went to Utah for college but come home to the Adirondacks most summers.

Libby Doan is Telemark Level 3 certified, and also serves as a Telemark Divisional clinic leader (DCL). With a BA from Bryn Mawr College, Libby has 30 years experience in independent school teaching and administration. She came to NCS in 2000, and before joining the admissions staff in 2011, taught sixth grade and served as the assistant head for academics. In 2015, she returned to the faculty as their Learning Specialist. In addition, Libby offers weekend activities, and supports the ski and snowboard program by teaching alpine and telemark skiers – especially the beginners.
